BAIBS Wednesday 11/09/13

So finally back on air today after an unscheduled break. Monday I missed due to what I'm gonna call exhaustion, Tuesday there was no show due to the unique way in which NPower is funded. i.e. you pay us thousands of pounds and we'll try and keep the hamster alive as it trundles round it's wheel. I believe that's how electricity is made. I could be wrong.

So, exhaustion. Well it was a very busy week work wise but this was partly due to my bosses doing the Tough Mudder on Saturday and I was holding the fort. I can hardly complain about exhaustion when they've done a 12 mile extreme assault course. H has come back with a torn muscle and Paul looks like one of the obstacles involves avoiding a machete wielding lunatic. I have nothing to complain about at all. I still felt the need to get away and recharge though so Monday found me hopping on a train, taking a late breakfast at Grindleford cafe and then getting lost in the hills.

I have mentioned before that I'm a lapsed atheist. It's a throwaway line, designed to be slightly amusing but it was thoroughly put to the test on Monday. Nature is a beautiful thing. The Hope Valley particularly so. As I stood on the moors above Grindleford looking at pure beauty for miles you have to say whoever designed it was having a seriously good day that day. As i gazed out, bathed in sunshine I could see a storm rolling around the hills to my left.

As if this wasn't majestic enough a rainbow appeared to my right.

For a brief moment I did think that maybe there was a God and he'd read my blog. 'Hmmmmm,' thinks God. 'A lapsed atheist. Maybe I can bring him back to the fold,' and proceeded to throw all his weight behind his campaign. Sadly as someone who was dragged, sometimes kicking and screaming, to church throughout my childhood he had his work cut out. I never got religion. I still don't. When tragedy happens to dismiss it as God moving in a mystery way or that he has a plan for us all is frankly insulting. If some mysterious plan involves taking my 28 year old friend, leaving behind a wife and two children, one of whom was only 2 months old at the time then it's not a plan I want any truck with. Common sense prevailed. I just admired nature for what it is. A wonderful, majestic joy to behold. Embrace it, love it. Just don't tell me God knocked it up one Wednesday afternoon after a light lunch.

Admittedly had Helena Bonham-Carter come waltzing through the rainbow at that time, sodden from the storm, God may have won me over.

More T-Fest shenanigans on today's show with organiser Jenni Hall and local talent James Taplin. I've long been an admirer of James and was delighted to get an exclusive play of a live track from his new band Smoking Beagles. Quality stuff indeed. T-Fest is shaping up nicely although I'm gonna miss it. 48ks guitarist Steve gets married that day having had his stag do on Tramlines weekend. Genius!

How many bar staff does it take to change a light bulb? Two it would seem with a screwdriver, a stanley knife and help from a handyman.

You can't write today's date without thinking of the terrible atrocities of 2001. The last two songs on today's playlist are very respectfully dedicated to the 2,996.
