BAIBS Wednesday 31/10/12

So, walking from Balby to Nether Hall Road at 6am, not the most exciting thing I've ever done. You'd have thought anyway.

Got run over outside the Leopard.

Maybe I should clarify that. Bloke on a bike went straight into the back of me, on the pavement!! I brandished my mug/flask thing, he brandished, well, nothing but let's say he brandished a bike pump. The following conversation ensued:

Him: Watch where you're going.

Me: (somewhat flumaxed): I'm, a pedestrian. You're a bike, well not a bike, but you're on a bike. You have a perfectly good road.

Him: Traffic.

Obviously 6am is too early for sentences.

Me: There's one car. Parked! That doesn't qualify as traffic.

Him: Well you should've seen me.

Me: You were behind me!!

Him: I've got a viz vest on.

Me: I, er, you, er, really?

He cycled off obviously happy with his victory. Couldn't help but notice during our chat his name badge poking out his viz vest. I'm not gonna name and shame but Graham Thompson you're a twonk. More worryingly beneath his name it said Managing Director. A company in good hands methinks.

Onwards. Got to the Frenchgate to find two window cleaners arguing over who's window it was to clean. More brandishing. Chamois this time. Wet ones. What's the plural of chamois? Maybe I should just go with shammies! But Sheila's probably reading and she'll tell me off. They both had bikes. And ladders. Those short ones that taper to a point. I was praying they'd get on their bikes, ladders in hand and joust down St. Sepulchre Gate. Alas it didn't happen. I'd have missed the show to watch that.

The show. A chocolate cheesecake junkyard cake away fuelled show! The cheesecake was a gift from the Cherry Blossom. It was huge!! Managed about a third last night. I gamefully waded through it during the show, ably assisted by DJ Johnny G who nipped in to destroy the studio basically. He did a better job on the studio than the cheesecake. By 10am I was down to about a quarter left but had to concede defeat.

Halloween special today. I played The Fall's version of Ghost In My House. That'll do wont it?

Tut tonight for the music quiz. I'm quietly unconfidant.

BAIBS Tuesday 30/10/12

Spiders. Everywhere. Sine FM Towers is awash with black plastic spiders. My monet's on Machen. Er, hang on, interesting typo. If I had a Monet I wouldn't hang it on Machen. He'd bench press it (or something) and break it. Start again. My money's on Steve Machen as the spider spreader. Saying that I've as much money as I have Monets.

So brand new Famous Villains tune, Ready To Die, made it's debut on today's show. It's another stormer from, arguably, Donny's finest band.

2 secs, forgot the crumpets were on.

Bugger. Burnt em.

Famous Villains then. They're the business. They look the part. Suited and booted on stage and cool as. But in a business awash with style over substance these guys deliver both. And then some. My grammar's gone to pot. I often lose my faculties when it comes to Famous Villains. Confession time: last time I saw them live (Leopard Sept 10th) they were that good I cried! I could wax on but just listen for yourselves and you'll see what I mean, 4 tracks of the highest quality.

I made a card today. 1st time since school! Too much time on my hands? Possibly! Still my artwork was admired. The Cherry Blossom's just too kind!

So Halloween tomorrow. Halloween special show? Never gonna happen. Might bang out Monster Mash but that's it. Saying that I make it up as I go so owt could happen really.

OK, off to scrape some crumpets.

BAIBS Monday 29/10/12

Ok, a fragile show today after a weekend of drinks with my bezzie, did I really just say bezzie, drums, surprise weddings, damp squibs and half showers.

So Friday night was chilling night with the Cherry Blossom and very lovely it was too. Saturday saw me at The Hallcross for my good friend Jason's engagement party. Unbeknownst to most of the party goers Jason and Dale had married earlier that day and were about to have ceremony number 2 on stage that night! It was my privilege to cordially invite people to a wedding they were already at. Outside for fireworks. Never buy cheap!!!! For a 500 firework box read 4! Still well done to Max for managing to fire a rocket straight into The Hallcross beer garden! Joyful chaos ensued and far too many ring of fire jokes.

Sunday back at the Cross briefly for Drumbeat Studio presents  My good friend Dean Cousins runs Drumbeat Studios, teaching drums to students from 10 to 60.  Every 6 months he puts on a showcase where the students get to play with a band, on stage, in front of a packed pub. It is a brilliant afternoon and very emotional and I couldn't be happier for students and teacher alike.

Off to the Tut to meet Ian and shout at Mark Clattenberg. 5 'just one last pints' later it's hometime and a confusing run in with a bin, a pile of leaves and a hedgehog.

And then it's Monday! Time flies etc even with the extra hour that I never did find.

Oh and the half showers? None of your business!!!!

SHEFFIELD O2 THURSDAY OCTOBER 25TH

Little Comets, General Fiasco, The Pilots

First up huge thanks to Rob Hamilton for the guest list!!!!

The Pilots take to the stage early doors, half 7. I've been in the O2 before and seen it empty at half 9.
It's rammed.
Luke, Robert, Liam and Richard walk on to screams. On a school night! They look cool, calm and composed. They're onto a winner already. The opening bars of Flash Light  kick in and the crowd go with them. At some point I'm gonna see The Pilots and not say 'that's the best I've seen you'. Not tonight though. They just get better and better. Luke (like Owen from General Fiasco later) sounds like he's borrowed the voice from someone 2 foot taller and barrel chested. It's immense. Resonant and tumbling. The band are tight, and smiling. This is a good gig!!!!! We know it, they know it. They sail effortlessly into She said To Me, new song You, Me History and Take You Back (I'll get the title of that right one day).
After every song I hear someone say 'that was my favourite', truth is they're all gems. James Dean follows, Liam's piano and Luke's vocals gorgeous and still. Rob's sticks twirl and the song kicks in. The room is bouncing, kids 'taking their chances while they're young'. All too soon it's last song of the night thank you for having us time. They finish with the epic Somewhere. It's a search for song on my ipod and will be for years to come.
The Pilots leave the stage, the O2 a sea of beaming smiles. I'm already looking forward to the next gig.

General Fiasco, confession time, I knew nothing of the band before last night. Caught a few tunes on youtube yesterday just to have a listen. They came on stage at 9. By half past I adored this band. Take the best bits of Big Country, multiply several times and you might come close to General Fiasco. Bouncy, rocky, jangly, all at the same time. Owen's voice is just ridiculously brilliant. Today's mission is to immerse myself in this band. By the end of their set I had a lump in my throat, a tear in my eye and was contemplating giving religion another go. They're THAT good.

Two things about Little Comets. One: They've always been a slow burning band for me. Tonight's show personified that. Two: Any band who has a line of rope tied across the front of the stage with various items of percussion hanging from it, including a saucepan, deserves some serious attention.
They start off slow and I'm worried that after all my excitement this could be an anti-climax. I'm an idiot! The songs build and build and by the time they play Adultery the crowd are bouncing all over the O2. The Enemy downstairs we're probably looking nervously at the ceiling. Jennifer I don't even hear, the crowd word perfect and making sure the band know just how loved they are. It's the perfect build up to the genius that is The Dancing Song. So catchy there should be a law against it. There probably is in the USA. The ultimate sing-a-long song with the band telling you, 'This one's for dancing', just in case you weren't sure.

And then it's over, Robert Cole's guitar hanging off 'the washing line' still feeding back as the crowd pray the lights don't come on. But they do.

BAIBS 26/10/12

FRIDAY, 26 OCTOBER 2012

The coffee was cold and the club biscuit a distant memory but nevertheless a hugely enjoyable show thanks to a stunning live session from Rita Payne, hardest working band in Donny. If you've not seen em live you're probably a hermit and doubtful that you're reading this which puts it down as one of the most futile sentences ever. Still it's out there now. Catch RP live at Mason's tonight and/or Doncaster Folk Festival Special Event tomorrow night at The Ukrainian Club. FYI my club was mint and not Ukrainian.
I've decided to post a full set list of every show. I'm forever getting 'who was that by' txts way after  the song's gone and I've moved on. A shocking memory combined with illegible handwriting means you'll never know hence the play listing here.
So, the weekend. LIE INS AHOY!!!!!!!! Warm ones. Which means I'll wake up at 5am with a freezing dangly arm. Don't ask. Tonight involves steak, tomorrow a gay engagement party with many a surprise in store and Sunday, well, Sunday's just Sunday.
Catch you all 7am Monday people.

Stir Fry and Cherry Blossom

So last night was stir fry and Cherry Blossom. Trust me on that, it's all good. Joined on this morning's show by Annette Ramsay and Gary Winterman from Rock4Youth. An awesome event taking place at Donny Dome on November 24th. Some truly great bands, Pure Pearl Jam, Jery At Controls, Unicorn Hunters, Lu More, Rita Payne to name but a few and all for a great cause. Follow them on twitter @Rock4Youth and get involved.
Today's show was curtailed due to a drugs and alcohol test at Amazon. The answer's C, Guinness. Due to an admin cock up it never happened! Joy of joys! Still an enjoyable show quoting Shakespeare and discussing fielding positions with Richard Pierce. If we'd played in the same team we could have discussed all things Pistols whilst poised ready and alert behind the stumps. Played some new stuff as per, The Kayas - Salute The Magpie. Highly recommended.
And on to tonight. (Bad grammar, sorry R and S)! Sheffield beckons, The Pilots, General Fiasco and Little Comets upstairs at the O2 with the aforementioned Blossom. Downstairs The Enemy are playing so hoping to get a chat with Tom Clarke while I'm there. 2 birds etc. And that's that. Off to discover which luminaries have a birthday tomorrow and cook bacon, oh and Sheila, I cant do coconut!

So this is it. The first Sine FM Bigger All Important Breakfast Show blog!! When I've worked out just what I'm doing this will be full of, er, I don't know what. I refer you back to the 'when I've worked out' sentence. Right, off to plan tomorrow's show and work out how this works. In that order. Laters.
