BAIBS Monday 06/05/13

Ah insomnia. It's a beautiful thing. Many people think insomniacs just don't need as much sleep but the tiredness hits us all at some point which is why I've just spent the hottest afternoon of the year so far in bed. And it's no joy lying in bed at 3am absolutely shattered but unable to sleep knowing you're up in a couple of hours. Still, came in quite handy for doing an 80 hour show.

So it's a bank holiday and a hot one at that. That sudden desperate national surge of we have to do something! Which is why all I can smell is barbecues and all I can hear is kids crying as they get thrown into freezing paddling pools. Facebook is full of people moaning about traffic as they head to the beach not thinking that thousands of others might have had the same thought. Could be worse though, could be a Sheffield United fan. They just lost in the League One play off semi finals to the mighty Yeovil. That's now 7 attempts at the play offs and 7 failures for the Blades including 5 in play off finals. Bet they wish they'd stayed in bed.

Bit of a mixed bag weekend. No Rovers of course and I'm missing them already. And a couple of hit and miss gigs. Ian Prowse (formerly of Pele, now of Amsterdam) at the Leopard Friday night was stunning. A great set interspersed with some seriously witty banter about the failings of other Scouse musicians. The guy really is a must see. Saturday night Lucy Spraggan played  a sold out show at the spotted cat but it was all a bit flat. It just wasn't an up for it crowd, too many people there just to say they were there as oppose to caring about the music. From where I was behind the bar there were times I couldn't hear Lucy cos of the crowd of lasses in front of me constantly yakking. I don't get why people go to a gig then just talk all the way through it, especially a paid gig. £8 to be seen seems ridiculous. It seems a common problem at smaller gigs these days and it really winds me up. Especially somewhere like The Leopard where if you're not bothered about the music then piss off downstairs to the pub so that those there purely for the music can enjoy it.

It's the Jamie McDonnell press conference tomorrow. I'm off to learn some boxing terminology so I look like I know what I'm talking about. I enjoy boxing but my knowledge of the sport is poor. I get as far as Ali, jab, guard and southpaw then I'm done.
