BAIBS Friday 05/07/13

As a child I was never a fan of the rich tea biscuit. It was ranked alongside the shortbread biscuit that tastes nothing like shortbread as the last in the barrel - only to be eaten when all the chocolate ones have gone. To summarize: a dull biscuit. And yet here I am charging my way through a packet like there's no tomorrow. I'm breaking all the rules though and having them with coffee. And in all honesty there are no chocolate biscuits in the house.

Speaking of crap food the corned beef's still lurking. Well half of it is. In the fridge now. To stop it lurking yesterday I decided on a corned beef sandwich only to be disappointed in so many ways. To start with the best thing about a tin of corned beef was the opening method. The dodgy key that unwound a strip of metal with the knowledge that one slip and you could lose a finger. It was like bomb disposal. And you never took the paper off first as instructed 'cos it was more of a challenge. Well that's all gone. Just a standard ring pull affair. No twisting. No danger. No fun. Admittedly no rush to the hospital for 12 stitches either.

As a child my Grandparents used to whisk me all over God's Own County to watch Yorkshire play cricket. The very first occasion (at Scarborough, a Sunday League game vs Essex in 1978 I believe) my Grandmother asked what I'd like in my sandwiches. My favourite at that time (apart from sugar) was corned beef and tomato sauce. I then proceeded to get corned beef and tomato sauce sandwiches every summer week for the next 5 years or so. It got so I couldn't look a corned beef in the eye. I'd not had one since those days til yesterday when for old times sake I braved the CB & TS Sarnie.

It was vile.

Work tonight with the brilliant Ian McNabb playing The Leopard. The Icicle Works are one of my favourite bands and last time he played Donny he did a stunning 2 hour plus set so it should be a good one. Oh and I'm interviewing him for the show. Last time we spoke on a much more informal basis we discussed what you could get up to alone in a hotel room when on tour with only a TV remote for company. Tonight's chat will have to be a lot more radio friendly.

Another excellent Do It Unplugged session today from In Vitro Babies, so young they headed straight off to school after their set. Seeing kids of that age so enthused about music is just heart warming. Promising talent as well, watch out for them. In fact if you're not heading to the Leopard tonight get yourselves to the Masons, In Vitro Babies are playing with another very young but very promising band, The Image.

Right, gotta go. I'm out of rich tea biscuits.
