BAIBS Monday 04/02/13

Add Honduras and Argentina to the readership. Only need some African readers to have fingers in every continent. Sausage fingers?

Latish blog today. Did that gym thing again. Feel free to slap me if I start talking about reps. I just wanna fit in my jeans again. Interesting how some bands are better to work out to than others. Ramones worked a treat but ultimately nearly killed me. They just don't do slow.

Went to my mate Ian's after the gym to help him fix his fence. There's so many problems with that I'm not sure where to begin. As we know I'm technically inept so I was there purely for lifting duties. Why two supposedly intelligent blokes thought walking round a garden with a five foot fence panel in 20 mph winds was a good idea I don't know. If we hadn't let go we'd be sailing somewhere over Filey by now.

Had a kinda distracted feeling all day.

Still have.

You can tell can't you. I'm putting it down to 30 hours without a cigarette. Not that I'm counting or anything!

Who's Band Is It Anyway?

I got to thinking of this when Wilko Johnson announced his farewell tour after being tragically diagnosed with cancer. Wilko of course was the guitarist and co-founder of Dr. Feelgood and to a lot of fans will always be synonymous with Feelgood. But he left in 1977 after 3 albums. In 1981 bassist John B. Sparks and drummer John Martin (The Big Figure) left. Singer Lee Brilleaux carried on with, after a few line up changes, PH Mitchell (bass), Gordon Russell then Steve Walwyn (guitar) and Kevin Morris (drums) until Brilleaux's death in 1994. The band carried on (at Brilleaux's insistence) with first Pete Gage and then Robert Kane on vocals. The Kane/Walwyn/Mitchell/Morris line-up still tours as Dr. Feelgood. Is this Dr. Feelgood? To many fans Dr. Feelgood are Brilleaux/Johnson/Sparks/Martin and always will be even though the current incarnation is the one that's been together the longest. I saw the 1986 version of Feelgood and even with Brilleaux singing it didn't feel like I'd seen Dr. Feelgood. I guess it's up to the band members although famously it can get messy.

At the moment 2 versions of The J. Geils Band are (attempting) to tour the states. One is J. Geils himself with a new band, the other is the remaining members of the original J. Geils Band. They are waiting for a judge to decide who hast the right to the band name before they carry on. It's staggering though that J. Geils may in effect have no rights to his own name.

Fleetwood Mac have just announced the 'Reunion' tour dates for the UK this year. No Christine McVie. Not really a reunion then is it? Or a full reunion anyway. And we could throw Peter Green into the equation and really mix it up.

Obviously some members of bands are more replaceable than others.  There's probably a pecking order:

Singer
Lead Guitarist
Second Guitarist
Bassist
Keyboards
Drummer (unless your Charlie Watts)

Sting and Phil Lynott overcame being 4th on the list by being singing bassists. Saying that Thin Lizzy have only just retired that name.

Status Quo fans are inordinately excited about the original line up doing 8 dates this year (I've got my ticket). Original bassist Alan Lancaster was in the band 24 years before he left. Replacement bassist Rhino Edwards is entering his 27th year with the band. Who's Quo's bassist?

There are a stack of examples of line-up changes that could be discussed here (Madness, Beautiful South, Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Big Country, The Cure, The Waterboys, The Wedding Present etc etc) but we'd be here all day and I've got to go plan a show and not think about cigarettes. To be continued methinks.
