BAIBS Thursday 08/08/13

Who decides to put films like Fight Club on at such ridiculous times of night. As you'll see by today's opening track will show I watched it all. Still, avoided the early night that buggered me up yesterday. I could have recorded it I guess but I'd already missed the start and would have to have deleted either Family Guy or Alan Partridge. Can't be doing that.

Another shlog today. 57 minutes to doors opening. I'm trying to blog whilst surrounded by various Darlingtons, instruments and film equipment. They're filming a video. Here begins my bid to be an extra. I've got the hair for it.

MapFest this weekend and several people have been bemoaning the lack of information out there about this year's event. It hasn't been ideal. It should be said that of the 4 main organisers last year only 2 are involved this year, and only one of those still works at a venue involved .And one of them is heavily pregnant and the other's got married and done all that selfish honeymooning stuff. I mean, come on, priorities! But there's reportedly 16 venues involved. Surely at least one of those venues could have stepped up to get things out there? It should also be mentioned that a local free magazine (the one that offered to arrange all the sponsorship for the biggest show but didn't) offered to arrange all the printing of posters and maps (quite crucial for an event called MapFest) but again didn't deliver. This is what I'm reliably informed has happened at least.

MapFest 2012 was great for Doncaster as a whole not just the music scene and venues/pubs involved. It would be a shame if it struggled this year. So get yourselves into Donny Friday night and all day Saturday and catch some live music. Details are out there, it just takes some searching. A lot of venues have their own listings on facebook, others are on http://mapfest.co.uk/

Speaking of MapFest, Sick Note Tez is playing at The Red Lion on the Saturday and joined me on today's show to give it a little plug. Another quality live set from this angry not so young man. It's always a joy having him on. He's also one of the Do It Unplugged artists though if you follow him on facebook you'll be more than aware of that.

Anyway, gotta dash. Ice to fetch and vegan menus to put out.

BAIBS Wednesday 07/08/13

Decided on a proper early night last night. Get some decent sleep instead of my usual 4 hours. Did that and woke up more shattered than ever. Back to the double ended candle methinks.

A definite shlog today. At work already. All set up but only got 27 minutes til the doors open.

I used to do this when I played Sunday League football, many many years ago. Hated to miss out on a Saturday night so went out and braved the consequences on the football pitch the next morning. Every now and then I decided to be good, stay in on a Saturday. Grit my teeth through Blind Date, stare catatonic at Casualty, endure Jimmy Hill on Match Of The Day and get to bed earlyish refreshed for the game Sunday morning. I was never a great player but I was miles better when I played with a hangover, or sometimes still drunk.

It wasn't just me either.I played centre half and I distinctly remember once having the opposing striker in my pocket all first half. He never got a sniff. We compared hangovers and his was far worse. At half time I saw him throwing up. In the second half he ran rings round me. I couldn't get near him and he scored a match winning hat-trick.

I always liked to think of myself as a hard but fair player. This was not the case. I was just dirty. As Charlie Williams (comedian and ex-Rovers) once said, 'Either the ball or the player got past me. Never both.' Back in the late '80s I played against one of the Donny Belles and thought I'd go easy if we went in for a tackle. First minute, 50/50 ball. I went flying 6' up in the air, nearly broke my ankle and she went scurrying off with the ball. Pretty much set the tone for the match. Found out later it was Karen Walker.83 England caps and nicknamed 'The Wacker.'

Speaking of football Tom Hark night at The Keepmoat last night. Yes I know I said yesterday there was to be no goal music but it was a decision overturned at the last minute. Saying that we only used it once and that was in the final minute. Same problem as Saturday, Rovers midfield looks strong, defence steady but we desperately need a striker. Though we did hit the woodwork 3 times. If they'd gone in it'd be problem? What problem. But that would be papering over the cracks.

Anyway, 12 minutes to opening. Shlog over.

BAIBS Tuesday 06/08/13

Well I've got one eye on the weather and one eye on my bed. This is obviously a ludicrous statement in so many ways. It's patently obvious I have both eyes on my laptop while I blog. The weather is outside so involves me turning and pointing both eyes at it. As for my bed, that's upstairs and can't even be seen from here, no matter how many eyes I gaze in that general direction.

My point is this: I fancy a nap. In my bed. But there's washing on the line that is not yet dry. It will be if the weather holds off but chances are if I nap now the clouds will see the so very nearly dry washing and go for it. The clouds are very threatening. Why do they feel the need to do this? We all know what black clouds entail. They could just politely announce (in a John Le Mesurier voice Mr. Perkins?) 'Hello, we're here. We may rain on you shortly. We do apologise but after all that is our job.' No need for threats. Unless clouds are chavs and can't help it. Maybe they should be burberry clouds so there's no denying their true intent.

Nipped to see middle daughter Charlie after today's show. She's 14 today. She was dressed as half a chicken.

Sat next to the most fragrant chap on the bus home. Took me the whole journey to work out what the aroma was. I'm still not totally sure but I think it was Thornton's Viennese Truffles.

The clouds have obviously taken offence at my chav comment and are throwing water at the washing. Back in a mo.

During the show while a song is playing I usually have at least another 4 other songs lined up ready to go. Some sit there for the duration and still never get played. As I get towards the end of the show though and I'm trying to work out timings to get the outro music in and the news played at bang on ten these tunes are whittled down til there's just the song playing and the outro music cued up. This almost had disastrous consequences today. Razor Blade Alley (Madness) was playing, Two Wounded Bird's Midnight Wave was ready to go after, which would have took me nicely to 9:57 and 35 seconds. Perfect timing for Egyptian Reggae. BUT my Madness CD packed up on me. I'm a tad upset about that. Midnight Wave was too short to fill the gap. Thankfully I still had Pond's Giant Tortoise lined up, I was just about to save it for another day. Too ,long a song but it filled a hole so to speak. Basically all this is leading up to an apology for the calamitous end to today's show.

Oh and if anyone's questioning the inclusion of The Darkness today blame their No.1 fan JJ the shoe seller.

Hopefully Tom Harking tonight as Rovers start their Capital One Cup campaign at home to Rochdale. STOP PRESS!! I've just this very second received an email saying no goal music tonight so no Tom Harking, just cheering.

Rain's stopped. Back to the original dilemma.

BAIBS Monday 05/08/13

TMS is on. Was expecting live commentary on the rain but there's play and Oz have made a great start to the day. There's life in the cons yet! Could be a tense blog.

Well another hectic weekend. Friday saw me step into JJ's shoes for The First 45. Think I did OK. Just the one Springsteen song. JJ's not heard it yet so the judge and jury's still out. Work Friday night then Rovers first game of the season on Saturday. Not a bad performance and the 3-1 defeat certainly flattered Blackpool. But the lack of natural goal scorer is a major worry. Hard to see were the goals are gonna come from. Still, early days.

Saturday night saw Rammstein tribute band Morderstein play The Leopard. I said on Friday I was gonna be totally out of my comfort zone but had a surprisingly pleasant night. A lot more melodies than I imagined. Was a bit off putting with the singer being a Geordie. One song had him dressed in chef's white and hat covered in fake blood. Lots of guttural German growling only for him to say at the end of the song, 'I forgot wor knife.' Got home to find drunken women littered all over the house.

Sunday I had pencilled in as a do nothing at all rest day. I did exactly as planned and was bored out of my pigging head!

Spotify just unexpectedly kicked in. Cricket commentary with Auction For The Promise club backing really works!

Nearly got run over on Sunny Bar today by white van chav. Came flying up onto the pavement and I just managed to avoid mayhem. He did apologise but I couldn't totally make out what he said due to my ipod but I think he thought my name was Ron Caird Blunt.

Anyway, must dash. Show planning, food, nap and work all to squeeze in today.

Happy Birthday Grandad. X

OK normally if I start the blog with the playlist it's because there's a link. Those of you that heard today's show will know the problems I had with the computer keyboard. No return button and the z,x,c,v and m didn't work. Try searching The Vaccines with no v or c. And as for Lady Punka's request for The Clash - Jimmy Jazz!!! No c, m or z! No chance. Anyway, I email myself the playlist to copy and paste on here. This is how it came out:

Jonathan Rihan And The odern Loers

Quite fetching I think but I shall try and rectify it for the end of the blog.

TMS is on and the Aussies are doing well.  Strange days indeed.

I'm back on the radio this evening, sitting in for JJ on The First 45, 6pm - 8pm. Hopefully the keyboard will be fixed. All new music tonight is the plan. I play a fair bit of new music but two hour's worth? Saying that I've a stack of new music emails to wade through. Could be handy.

Tomorrow sees the start of the football season and the first Tom Harking of the season. I love Rovers. Have done for 35 years but some Rovers' fans just stagger me. Constant moaning through the pre season about lack of signings. Because I'm sure Rovers really didn't try to sign anyone just to annoy the fans!

And the latest is the Louis Tomlinson affair. Rovers have signed up the One Direction chap (check me out being polite about One Direction) to play in a reserve game all to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice. It's a great cause, will raise a small fortune and let's be honest great PR for Rovers. OK some media outlets didn't mention the charity aspect and hinted that he would be playing first team football. Heaven forbid the media tell the full story. But did any Rovers fans really read these reports and think we'd signed him on properly? Or did it not occur to them that the story needed some more investigating. Words like embarrassment and laughing stock have been flying about. The only embarrassing aspect for me has been the Rovers' fans ranting about it. Let other teams' fans take the p**s if they wish. I personally I'm quite proud of my club for this. Shame on Rovers for trying to do something worthwhile!

Still, it's always been a football fan thing to moan. Just feels like Rovers are worse than others at times, Last week at Bradford, first minute of the game, Richie Wellens back in a Rovers shirt which I'm rather delighted about. He goes in for a crunching tackle. Beautiful. One lone voice from behind me, 'Earn your place Wellens!' I don't even know what that meant!

There's loads more like that but I'll shut up. Working tomorrow night as a Rammstein tribute band take the stage at The Leopard. I'm way out of my comfort zone on that one!

Anyway, I have to investigate new music and fix this playlist.

OK maybe a few discrepancies, Sunshine Underground for instance aren't Yorkshire born but they've been Leeds based long enough to count as a Yorkshire band. And any queries on band locations bring it up with Wikipedia.

I don't know what it is about being a Yorkshireman but it does give you a unique sense of pride. To misquote someone (no idea who), 'Don't ask a man if he's from Yorkshire. If he hasn't told you in the first minute of meeting then he obviously isn't and you shouldn't make him feel inferior.'

I'll shut up about Yorkshire now for fear of alienating 80% of you.

A short, rushed blog today. I shall call it a shlog, which is how the Dutch tailend bat. Ah a cricket reference already. Today is day one of the 3rd Test but I'm at work, hence the shlog, so no TMS for me today. Let's hope BBC news are on the ball.

Cracking phone interview today with the awesome blues guitarist Chantel McGregor. She's an amazing talent, great to chat to and likes real ale, fast cars and cats. Not at the same time I presume. You have to catch her live at the Cusworth Music Festival on August 25th. Busy time for Donny music: MapFest next week, Cusworth, then Doncaster Live in September. And many a great gig in between.

Speaking of Donny music a major highlight for me in today's playlist was Slug The Nightwatchman. Stalwarts of the Donny scene in the mid/late '80s, my Slug album had long since given up the ghost. I'd posted on Facebook asking people their favourite Yorkshire band. Helen Chambers said Slug. A facebook chat ensued which culminated in her dropping a copy of Slug's album at Sine FM Hall. Drinkin' My Whisky has never sounded better. Took me rate back. Gone all Yorkshire again! Helen, thank you so much!!!!!

Right, better do some proper work. Shlog over.

BAIBS Tuesday 30/07/13

I was thinking I'd had quite a prolific month of blogging. This is blog number 19 this month but with tomorrow being the last day of the month I wont beat my current record of 23 blogs in a month. That was January this year. Now given I don't blog if I've not done a show it would follow that in that most depressing and cold infected of months I made my most radio appearances. My least productive being April with only 12 blogs. I have no explanation for this suffice to say my birthday falls in the middle of April. That could be it.

Is it acceptable to say on the radio, 'I'd rather have my ears bitten off by a rabid goat.'? Kinda tough if it isn't 'cos that was my response when asked if I'd like to interview Scouting For Girls. Well, just what is the point of Scouting For Girls?

I'm a tad peckish and there's another box of mussels in the fridge. Dare I? It's like being a member of a dangerous sports club. Think I'll give it a miss and have cereal. You know where you are with a flake of corn.

I was thinking I had a nice steady day today but I've got a phone interview to organise on Thursday's show (the very brilliant Chantel McGregor), a Yorkshire Day playlist to sort out and I'm hosting The First 45 for JJ on Friday and really should have some idea what I'm gonna play. I've been told it's to be a Springsteen free zone!

Now as you know I've always championed us pedestrians as free spirits. Not tied down by no entry signs. No keeping left for us. No parking here between 5:14pm and 6:27pm unless you have a permit signed by the Chief Llama doesn't affect us. (I spent a lot of time there researching affect or effect and think I got it right). BUT I'm fast thinking that the Pavement Code maybe long overdue. Someone walked into me today then claimed 'it was there right of way.' (I know it's their not there but they looked illiterate). And then some old couple just braking suddenly in front of me. A six pedestrian pile up was narrowly avoided. Sort it out people. If they bring in a Pavement Code it wont be long before this government latch onto a pavement tax.

Right, I'm off to glare at mussels.
